Star pet of the month!

This month's Pet of the Month has been jointly awarded to Poppy (right) and Tiggy (below). Poppy became seriously ill with a severe bout of pancreatitis, which caused complications with her kidneys and... liver, and resulted in a blood clotting disorder. Her red blood cells dropped to a dangerously low level (12% - normal for cats is over 30%), and she needed a life saving blood transfusion.

Fortunately, Tiggy was on hand to act as a blood donor. Over the next few days, Poppy began to slowly recover, gradually regaining her appetite and strength. Poppy's blood transfusion would not have been possible without her pet insurance.

Thanks to Tiggy's bravery and the hard work of the team at our Bradley Stoke hospital, Poppy was able to go home and is now back to full health.

Unlike dogs, it is not yet possible to store feline blood products, although the Pet Blood Bank (supported by Kate and Brian on their Kilimanjaro climb) are researching ways to make this possible. This means that new donors are always in demand.

Tiggy has so far helped to save the lives of three other cats, but needs to retire soon. If you would be willing to let your cat join our blood donor register, please contact our Bradley Stoke hospital for more information, on 01454 275000.
