Foot & Mouth Disease

Three of our Veterinary Surgeons, Mr Philip Marsh (head of the farm animal department), Mrs Catherine Morris and Ms Kirsty Ford volunteered to help MAFF during the outbreak. This was a demanding and unpleasant job. We are very grateful to our colleagues for what they have done to help.

The Farm department is fully active during the crisis. We are endeavouring to 'rotate' Vets to maximise the length of time any vet spends between visits to farms and thus minimise any risk of cross infection. All vets are taking full disinfection precautions.

All animals with symptoms suspicious of FMD should be reported directly to MAFF. Please do not hesitate to ring us for advice first.

To help us minimise the risk of cross-infection various measures are in force:

  • No farm animals are to be transported to the surgery for treatment
  • All routine TB tests are cancelled
  • Routine farm work can still be undertaken where suitable disinfection facilities are available.
  • Farmers are requested not to enter any of the practice buildings, when collecting drugs please order in advance by telephone and hoot your car horn when arriving to collect drugs. We will bring drugs out to the car.
  • Disinfection facilities are available at all of our branches. Visitors are requested to disinfect their vehicles and shoes if they have had any farm contact.
  • Horse calls are unaffected at present however if farm animals are present at the stable please ensure that suitable disinfection facilities are available
  • Suitable MAFF approved disinfectants are available from us.
  • Our farm vets are happy to provide advice on the outbreak and its implications.
