The Lifecycle of the Flea
The adult flea sucks the blood of the host animal and is therefore the ONLY PART OF THE LIFE CYCLE FOUND ON THE CAT OR DOG.
| Adult fleas lay up to 40 eggs per day! These fall off the host animal and on to an area frequently used by your pet e.g. carpet / sofa etc. These eggs can hatch within a week or up to 2 years later. |
| The flea larva hatches from the egg using a special, hard EGG TOOTH. The drug Program makes this tooth soft and the larvae are prevented from hatching. The larvae live in warm, dark areas, such as CARPETS and under RADIATORS. They feed on adult flea faeces. |
| Flea larvae spin cocoons IN CARPETS and pupate into adult fleas.
They hatch in masses when they detect warm temperatures or vibrations.
Pupation lasts for 3 - 7 days or up to a year depending on temperature and the Carbon dioxide concentration in the air. Carbon dioxide is produced by animals and people breathing. This is very low in empty houses suppressing hatching. |
