Dangerous Equine Virus Outbreak in Gloucestershire

March 2003

Following a recent outbreak of the highly contagious equine herpes virus (EHV) at a famous Cotswold racing yard another two suspected outbreaks have been reported today. These possible outbreaks are in the South East of England, tests are currently being carried out to confirm this.

In the recent Gloucestershire outbreak two horses had to be euthanased due to paralysis of the hind limbs.

Vets are being urged to advise horse owners to vaccinate against this potentially lethal disease, which can cause severe loss of form and other problems including abortion and even paralysis.

A vaccine is available for this dreadful disease. Please contact the surgery to discuss with one of our equine Veterinary surgeons the need for your horses to be vaccinated.
