Cats, Dogs and Worms

Introducing Worms

Worms are parasites that live inside your cat or "endoparasites". They are a large group of animals divided in to two main groups:

Tapeworms or cestodes: These worms can be very long being made of many segments. Each of these segments contains up to a million eggs. They look like rice grains and are usually found on carpets or around the anus of your cat. Larvae migrate through tissues of hosts (flea, mouse) and form cysts.

The lifecycle of the tapeworm:

The most common tapeworm of cats is Dipylidium caninum. It is transmitted by FLEAS. Here is a picture of its Life cycle:

Roundworms or nematodes: Are approx. 2 - 10cm in length Look like elastic bands

Shed up to 26 000 eggs per worm per day Migrate through many tissues and may lie dormant for the lifetime of your cat!

All of these spend at least some of their life cycle off your pet and some require another animal to complete their life cycle.
